Nearly 1 million Americans - about 64,000 of them in Florida - are living with Parkinson's disease, a degenerative movement disorder that can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech, and sensory function. Our program offers members a class that meets three times a week to integrate key exercise components while providing support and socialization opportunities.
During the class members will participate boxing, water fitness workouts, group cycling, balance practice, and more. Led by Certified Personal Trainer Morgan Perceval, and supported by other staff and volunteers, the class also offers patients a chance to get to know others dealing with this disease. A couple times a year, we also hold social events at the Y.
Our program is built around rigorous exercise that emphasizes gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm.
Research has shown that this type of exercise can positively affect range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait, and functional fitness for Parkinson's patients.
