From the Director – Beware the Bermuda Triangle

I got serious about my health in my mid-20s, and since then, I rarely skip exercise. And yet, as consistent as I am about working out, I can easily slip into the Bermuda Triangle that lies between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

You know what I’m talking about – that seemingly endless to do list of parties, family gatherings, shopping, decorating, eating and other stuff that we fondly call “the holidays.” The natural companion to all that activity is typically a time crunch and a lower-than-usual motivation level for even the most focused among us.

So it’s time for my annual speech, the one that goes like this: This, my friends, is not a time for lofty goals. It’s not a time to decide to lose 10 pounds or to start training for your first-ever competitive event. For most of us, this is simply a time to hold the line – to maintain our fitness base and practice moderation.

Instead of having unrealistic expectations or beating yourself up for those missed workouts, why not just set some reasonable goals for the holidays?

  • Aim for intentional movement at least three times a week. A brisk neighborhood walk counts. So does active playtime with kids and grandkids.
  • Allow yourself some very favorite treats on a limited basis, but keep your eating habits in check the rest of the time.
  • Commit to 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of plain water.
  • Make time every day to be quiet, reflect, give thanks and breathe.
  • Create a master holiday “to do” list, and then review it and ruthlessly delete anything that is truly unnecessary or doesn’t bring you joy.

With the right attitude and a little planning, the holidays don’t have to be a time when you un-do all the good you’ve done for your health this year.

And, if you’re struggling with what to get that hard-to-shop-for person on your list, or you’re giving thanks for your great Y experience, why not give the gift of health? You can purchase gift certificates at our front desk and share the Y with those you love.

We also know that current members are our best source of new members, so bring your family, friends and co-workers in with you this month. That way you can catch up while getting some exercise.

Throughout the Christmas holidays, your YMCA staff is here to support you along the way. We wish you and your family a blessed, peaceful and safe Christmas and a joyous New Year!
