March Program Spotlight

The YMCA offers numerous programs unique and specific to the needs of a particular part of the population that might otherwise not have the opportunity to enjoy the Y and its benefits. Through community partnerships and enrollment opportunities, the Bear Levin Studer Y offers classes and sessions throughout the week to large number of members.

Parkinson’s Rock Solid Boxing is an evidence-based class, vetted by the Parkinson’s Foundation. It provides a class specific to the effects that Parkinson's has on the body and how special boxing moves can strengthen muscles, improve mobility, increase cognitive skills with motor learning patterns, and build new neuro-pathways. Angie and Morgan are currently teaching this class. “Seeing, our members put on gloves and really enjoy working out in a safe and fun environment is such a blessing," Morgan said. "They really get a kick out of using the boxing equipment. Rewarding and fun, they always leave class tired and happy." Our members gather to box on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Play 60 is a new program that the Y is offering to encourage school-age children to participate in at least 60 minutes of play time per day. Our facility has chosen yoga as a way to get our children to stretch, bend and balance their way to better health and wellness. On Wednesdays at 3:15 pm., they are invited to join Angela for Kids’ Yoga. This is an amazing and easy way to decompress and re-center your child after school.

The WISEWOMAN Program is in its second year at the YMCA. Along with the Escambia County Health Department, our members are part of an effort to introduce them to a wellness and fitness facility and understand the importance of staying active in a fun, safe and inclusive environment. The women are hand selected to join the YMCA for 12 weeks while they explore all the ways that wellness can have a positive impact on their lives and the lives of people around them. At the end of 12 weeks, we support them in a seamless transition from the program to Ymembership. These participants enjoy classes, time in the pool and light cardio sessions on the gym floor. Their progress in monitored and reported to the State of Florida’s Department of Public Health. We have one of the most successful programs in the state for positive health outcomes; meaning a decrease in the top five high-risk and preventable health-related diseases. We could not be prouder of the success that our women are having as they start and stay with us at the YMCA.

Our Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
