June - Exercising Together

The pool at the Betty J. Pullum YMCA opened on May 1 for the summer season. We are excited to serve our community with many different programs at our pool. Our swimming pools at the Y aren’t just used for youth swim lessons or to keep families cool in the summer—they can help members of all ages.We offer water aerobics classes five days a week at 8 am. The water aerobics classes offered at the Pullum Family Y are good for people of all ages and fitness levels.

All are welcome to experience our friendly community devoted to developing a healthier spirit, mind and body. You are welcome to try one of our water aerobics classes by purchasing a visitor’s day pass or by signing up for a monthly membership. We are here to help you commit to your long-term personal fitness goals.

Starting a new exercise routine in the pool is easy. All you need is a swimsuit, water bottle and a towel. We do ask that ALL pool goers wear swimsuit cover ups and shoes when walking through the facility to access the pool. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Many members wear protective items like hats, shades and swim shirts to protect against UV rays.

The natural resistance that is created when you exercise in water helps tone and build your body’s muscles. This low-impact style of workout ensures less stress on aching or recovering joints. Water aerobics is perfect for active older adults, pregnant women, and even athletes looking to rehab new or old injuries. Our fitness instructors offer a variety of exercises and options during your workout.

TONE MUSCLES AND BURN CALORIES

Our bodies and muscles must work harder in water because it is thicker than air and therefore more resistant to movement. This makes exercising in the water a great way to burn calories and better tone your muscles. We offer floating weights to increase your resistance, or you can choose to do any exercise without the weights. This ensures a more rounded and tailored to your needs workout.

BALANCE WORK

In the pool you shouldn’t worry about falling, as being in the water helps you to stay more balanced. The only thing you might worry about is trying to keep your hair dry! Water aerobics exercises are low risk compared to land workouts, when it comes to falls or injuring yourself. Water aerobics can help you find balance on land, and even improve flexibility because your joints tend to naturally increase their range of motion when you’re in the water.

HEALTHY HEART

Attending water aerobics regularly can help improve heart health and cardiovascular strength. The water’s pressure acts as your friend in the pool and helps circulate the blood in your body more efficiently. Your heart continues beating and pumping away with less strain and pressure over time while in the water. This can effectively lower your risk for heart disease. Water aerobics has even been shown to have positive effects on high blood pressure.

NO PRESSURE

Gravity can be harsh when you exercise on land. The impact on your knees and other joints can be painful, and you can find yourself out of breath quickly. The natural buoyancy of water helps you to feel almost weightless during water aerobics. This can reduce unwanted pressure onyour body and joints which helps to leave you less winded. You control your workout and can build up your endurance by increasing intensity at your own pace. Water aerobics and other low-impact styles of workouts are good for people who suffer from joint pain, or other degenerative body conditions.

GET SOCIAL

Studies show that being social has an impact on your health. We have a very warm and friendly water aerobics group. You can get connected on our face book group called Navarre YMCA water aerobics. Our members love to meet up daily at the pool and often check in on fellow members when they are not at class. You will find information about the pool as well as plenty of positive encouragement.

What's stopping you?

You don’t need to feel worried or embarrassed about entering the pool at the YMCA. Our waters are judgment free. You are not expected to know all of the steps or exercises during class. That’s what our instructors are here for. Don’t worry about missing any steps because no one can see it when you’re in the water anyway.

We look forward to meeting you at the pool. See you soon.

Our Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
