September - Exercising Together

Our newest addition the group fitness schedule is Kettlebell 30, on Mondays at 7 am at the Pullum Branch. It’s a 30-minute HIIT workout with kettlebells.

Let’s start with the question “What is a kettlebell?” You have probably walked by a kettlebell or two around our Y. They can be intimidating if you have never used them before, or maybe you thought they were just a heavy duty door stop. It is an exercise tool that is made from cast-iron or steel. The shape resembles a cannonball with a handle. Some people compare it to a teapot without a spout. The kettlebell first gained recognition around 350 years ago when Russians started throwing them around for entertainment. This recreation soon transitioned into weightlifting. There is also a claim that in the fifth century, ancient Greeks developed such objects for weight training.

Today we use kettlebells for burning calories and building upper and lower body endurance. Akettlebell’s structure makes it effective. They often feel heavier than a traditional dumbbell due to their center of gravity. They not only improve strength but balance as well. Did you know that kettlebells can be an alternative to traditional cardio since they activate muscles that are responsible for respiratory activity? If running is not your favorite, try swinging a kettlebell. This class focuses on the basics of kettlebell moves. The swing is focused on, and form is taught by the instructor.

Some other benefits of kettlebell workouts includes a stronger grip and more powerful forearms. This workout is dynamic and requires the use of various muscle groups. This means you can reduce your workout time with kettlebells as you can get a full body workout in less than 30 minutes. You will be swinging your way to improving your strength and power along with increasing core strength and stability. There are also benefits to your posture. Overall, kettlebells bring a full body benefit.

All levels are welcome to this 30-minute workout on Mondays. Many options are offered. Kettlebell 30 is a great way to kick off your morning and week. Hope to see you there.
