October Program Spotlight

We say it all the time: The YMCA is MORE than a gym. At the Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA, we are also offering a wide range of certification classes to the community.

Here is a breakdown of the many classes we offer here at the Y for you, your family and the community:

CPR/First Aid/ AED Certification:You can get CPR certified here at the YMCA!

American Safety & Health Institute CPR is for individuals who are not healthcare providers or professional rescuers but desire or are required to be certified in basic emergency medical care, including certification in CPR and the use of an AED. This certification will include CPR, First Aid and AED.

This class requires pre-class online work that will sent as soon as you register for class. Certification is good for 2 years.

Class dates: October 10 & December 5

Cost: $25 members/$65 all others

Child and Babysitting Safety Class:Open to anyone 11 and older.

The ASHI Child and Babysitting Safety training program provides training in the business of babysitting, proper supervision, basic caregiving skills, and responding properly to ill or injured children and infants. With a focus on supervising, caring for, and keeping children and infants safe in babysitting settings.

This class is taught 9 am-2 pm at the Y. No pre-class work required.

Class date: December 21

Cost: $50 members/$75 all others

Junior Lifeguard Certification:Open to anyone 11-15 years old.

Encourages leadership development in the area of aquatic safety with a goal to prepare and motivate participates to become lifeguard. The Junior Lifeguard Certification program has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help you meet the prerequisites for the lifeguard certification course. The program will introduce you to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues; use of a rescue tube; and First Aid, CPR, and AED. You will also have the opportunity to shadow lifeguards in rotation to get a real sense of being on the job.

This is set up as an all-day camp program from 9 am-5 pm.

Class dates: December 21-23

Cost: $100 members/$150 all others

YMCA Lifeguard Certification:Are you interested in working for the YMCA as a lifeguard? This is the first step. Open to anyone in the community

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) courses: CPR Pro (BLS) for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid for the Community, and Emergency Oxygen Administration.

The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf, and waterpark environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary.

The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Students must pass the physical skills test prior to the class and must be 16 years of age by the last day of the scheduled class.

There is pre-class work before the first day of class. Certification good for 2 years

Class dates: October 16-18 & November 20-22

Cost: $50 member/all others

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification:Open to anyone in the community.

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This program offers a choice of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience.

Pre-class work required before first day of class.

Class dates: December 18-20

Cost: $150 members/$250 all others

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification:Open to any current lifeguard in the community.

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.

Pre-class work required before first day of class.

Class date: December 16-20

Cost: $200 members/$300 all others
