October - Program Corner

Our senior programs are back on the rise. After the release of the vaccine, many of our senior members are ready to get back to the fun and socialization that our Y provides. Research shows that staying social has numerous mental and physical health benefits. The National Institute on Aging says research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. Here are 5 ways to get social and active at the Y.

  1. Volunteer your talents.Ask your welcome center about opportunities to volunteer for your Y. We host events and are always looking for volunteers.
  2. Attend a Senior Fitness class. This is a great way to meet other seniors and stay active with physical fitness. We strive to meet you where you are in your fitness journey. Our instructors offer many options to meet the entire classes needs.
  3. Bingo! We have monthly games of bingo at the Pullum Y, where you can enjoy some pizza and win prizes. We have a signup sheet at the front desk, and $5 reserves your spot.
  4. Say yes to the pot luck. We have some seniors who love to organize fun pot luck events for everything from Octoberfest to Fourthof July. You can bring your favorite dish, using your fine culinary skills, and share with your Y family.
  5. Just enjoy a nice cup of joe and relax at our tables. The coffee is back on at the Pullum Y. Many of our seniors just like to visit and hang around our welcome center.

We hope to see you at the Y soon.
