Have you met Avelino and Maria Lima?

Avelino and Maria arrived in the United States in 1987, and their first language is Portuguese. Coming in at least two to three times a week, they are some of our most active members.

Being active not only helps your body, but extends your social network.

If you are a frequent visitor in the evenings, then you’ve more than likely seen Avelino and Maria, whether it be on the Wellness Floor or in the Aquatics Center.

After moving from West Virginia, Avelino and Maria were looking for a place to continue their exercise journey to be health conscious and to act on that. They eventually came across the Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA. After being members at various locations since 1995, Maria and Avelino joined our Y in Spring 2018. What do they enjoy most about the YMCA? The group exercise classes and Aqua Zumba!

It is the best!

Before coming to Pensacola, Avelino was a chemist for Du Pont - the company that invented nylon - for 40 years. He also worked with Ascend Performance Materials in Cantonment for three years. Maria worked in the Adult Learning Center in West Virginia for 16 years.

Outside of the Y, Avelino and Maria both currently enjoy traveling, reading, going to the beach, and spending time with their grandchildren.

Our Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
