When you Google "step aerobics," Wikipedia will tell you that step aerobics is a form of aerobic exercise that uses a low elevated platform, the step, of height tailored to individual needs by inserting risers.
Step aerobics was developed by Gin Miller around 1989. After a knee injury, Miller consulted with an orthopedic doctor, who recommended she strengthen the muscles supporting the knee by stepping up and down on a milk crate. From this, she developed the step regimen.
Step has evolved over the last 30 years and has been at the top of the group fitness trends list for many of those years. It has all the benefits of a high-intensity cardio workout without putting stress on your joints. It improves overall fitness by building strength and boosting your cardiovascular health.
The Pullum Y has featured step aerobics in its class lineup for years. Join us on Tuesday and Thursday at 9 am and on Tuesday at 8 am for this great workout. The Bear Levin Studer Y offers step on Mondays at 9:25 am.
All levels are welcome in Step classes offered at our YMCA. Each class starts with basic moves that build into a final masterpiece of movement with music. Step aerobics is a terrific cross-training activity for runners, cyclists, and walkers.
The moves target your legs, upper body, and core, building strength and flexibility. They also improve your balance, coordination, and agility. The number of calories burned depends on the speed of movements, step height, length of exercise, and the persons height and weight. Step aerobics is helpful in managing blood pressure and diabetes. People with osteoporosis or osteopenia can do this low-impact exercise to improve bone strength.
In Step class you get to experience movement in positive, memorable, and purposeful ways. This inspires meaningful change both physically and mentally. Working out with a group gives you a sense of belonging and connects with you with other health and wellness seekers. It a place and time where people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds can come together and work on their wellness without judgement or expectation. Hope to see you in a Step class soon.
