December From the Director

As the year draws to a close, it’s time for our annual message of maintaining “holiday health” in spirit, mind and body. Most of us face a seemingly endless “to do” list of parties, family gatherings, shopping, decorating, eating and other distractions that we call “the holidays.” To fight all the excuses that can easily sabotage even the most well-intentioned, here are a few strategies to help you maintain balance during the coming weeks.

  • Whittle your list. Create a master “to do” list, then review it and ruthlessly delete anything that is unnecessary or doesn’t bring you joy. Put it away for a day. Review and scratch more. Repeat as needed until you can look at the list and smile.
  • Be still. Make some time every day for quiet reflection and prayer. Find a time and place in your daily routine where you can center yourself and practice gratitude.
  • Give. Abiding joy grows when we serve others. The holidays offer ample opportunities to put the needs of others first.
  • Keep moving. Even if it’s not your usual workout, if it’s shorter or less challenging, just keep moving. Even a brisk walk can keep you in the exercise habit.
  • Limit the treats. Make your special treats really special. If you take one bite and it’s not as amazing as you had hoped, put it down and walk away. And be sure to drink plenty of water.
  • Rest. Commit to an adequate amount of sleep every night. Insufficient sleep makes you cranky and interferes with your normal hunger indicators – which we really don’t need at this time of year.
  • Go retro. Step away from all the screens and find an old-fashioned way to reconnect with others. Read an actual book, play cards, or write a letter to someone who will be delighted to receive “real mail.”

With the right attitude and a little planning, the holidays don’t have to be a time when you un-do all the good you’ve done for your health and wellness.

Throughout the Christmas season, your Y staff is here for you. We wish you and your family a blessed, peaceful and safe Christmas and a joyous New Year!
