August Health Spotlight

5 Healthy Habits you can start today that will have a positive impact on your health.

1) Drink water all day, not just before or after your workout. Drinking more water has so many health benefits. This new habit can impact brain health, heart health and body weight in positive ways. Staying hydrated is important to a healthy, fully functioning body. Our bodies are more than 60 percent water, which is responsible for transporting oxygen, fat and glucose to our muscles, as well as aiding with food digestion and waste removal. Drinking the daily recommended amount of water can be a challenge.

Try some of these hydrating fruits….

- Watermelons are 92% water

- Strawberries are 92% water

- Cantaloupes are 90% water

- Pineapples are 87% water

- Oranges are 87% water

2)
Walk for 30 minutes every day. The American Heart Association recommends that you engage in moderate exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Run if you enjoy it, but you can derive just as much benefit from walking for 30 minutes for 5 days a week. Hit the trails in shady woods or along a sandy beach shoreline. It can be 10 or more degrees cooler than the sunny streets in your neighborhood. Try making it a family thing that you do daily. Be sure to include your pets when possible.

3)Make sure your plate consists of equal proportions of protein, a source of minerals and vitamins (vegetables) and carbs.

4)Read five pages from a book.Reading the right books makes us smarter and keeps our brains sharp. Some of us would not consider ourselves bookworms, so starting this habit could make things easier. Pick up a book and read just five pages at a specific time every day. You will knock out quite the library if you keep the habit up.

5) Get sleep.Make an effort to get between 7-8 hours of sleep. Start a new sleep routine to get ready for sleep. Maybe you take a shower, turn off all screens, phones and TVs. Set the stage for a good night’s sleep. Try keeping your room cool and dark.
